History: 

Our team has a short history together with only 2 seasons of play, and we started as an individuals team— complete strangers to each other. Then after a wrap up beer on the Campio patio, we sealed the deal and decided to become a team. We became fast friends and just love this game! The camaraderie, fitness, sportsmenship and getting to see our friends weekly is by far our favourite aspect for being a team in ESSC. We can’t wait for our third season and hopefully we can add league champs to our list with a Lady Bing award as well!! Thank you for our nomination for Lady Bing.

Hi, this is our team Spiked Lee and I'm going to introduce you to our outstanding players.(left to right) Mark is known for his high vertical leap and can-do motivation. Veronica's positive attitude, and coordination makes her unstoppable! Stephanie's strong legs, and coordination makes her an optimal player on the court. Kelsey positive attitude and communication skills through her loyalty and reliability every game we play. Sean has excellent stamina with meticulous pivoting skills making him a real sharpshooter on the court. Keora has excellent stamina with dependable accuracy optimizing our performance on the court. We all met this season on the individual's team, and it's been great that we got brought together as a group.

We are the Beatables. We are a group of friends who have played together in the ESSC for several years now, swapping out a few players every season! The Beatables love playing ball hockey for the fun and social aspects!! We like to make jokes and have fun while getting some exercise! Ball hockey is our jam!

 Our team the "Goal Diggers" started playing in ESSC just this last spring 2023 and are now participating in our 3rd season! Some of us grew up playing soccer and took a hiatus in our 20s but are back at it with a ton of passion (and some skill) . We may not win most of our games but we love having an excuse to get together, move our bodies and have fun. We are proud that our team spirit doesn't go unnoticed and have landed us a nomination for the Lady Bing award!

Our team name is Jimbo’s Bimbos and we are making our ESSC debut this year in Multi-sport! Our team consists of Jacob, Tristen, James (Jimbo), Chase, Evan, Aidan, Ben, Beth, Julia, Ellen and Monica and we each have our own unique sports backgrounds and experiences. Regardless of the sport we play for the week, we have someone with experience who steps up and provides guidance to the team, fostering a very supportive environment. While we may be rookies in the ESSC, we have really enjoyed the connections and friendships we have formed with our team and the opposing teams. We are all passionate competitors and there is no better way to play than alongside your closest friends!

History: Power Snatch has been playing Slo Pitch in ESSC since 2010. What started out as a corporate team for a local gym, quickly changed to a group of friends just wanting an excuse to hangout and play some sports. Of course we're not the same team that started 13 years ago, but some have been playing together for 7 or more years, and even 2 are still with the team since the beginning. But no matter who's on the team we have a few philosophies we follow; no strike outs, no walks, winning is everything, take no prisoners, hack the bone, and go for the shin. We must have had an off game to have been nominated, but thanks for the honor.

It took us a bit to decide what are team name would be, but we wanted it to be catchy. This is our first season as a team and most of us have not played any slo-pitch before, so everything is a learning experience. Most of us are nurses working in mental health that just want to do something fun to destress and enjoy.

History: We’re the Motion to Strikeouts, and this is our second slo-pitch season with ESSC. This season has had ups (the great vibes of hanging out and playing on the premium fields) and downs (our score relative to the other teams’), but every game has been lots of fun. Have we had countless opportunities to evaluate how many of our players can scale a fence to retrieve the opposing teams’ home-run balls? Yes. Did we have a player eating a hot dog while at-bat? Also yes. Do we have a player who has a broken foot and has played in a boot all year? Yes again. But as the common saying goes, “if you’re not scaling a fence with a hot dog in your mouth and a boot on your foot, then you’re not living”.

Meet the Rainbow Unicorns, a vibrant and spirited team that brings a touch of magic to the soccer field. Originally formed by Carolyn Truong, her globe trotting adventures have left the team in the capable boots of Captain Sam. Comprised of players with an unwavering passion for the game, the Rainbow Unicorns have been gracefully galloping through the seasons with the ESSC (Extreme Sports and Social Club) since their inception – like 12 seasons ago? Each member embraces their unique and colorful personality through a tie-dye shirt, emblazoned with a golden unicorn, exemplifying the very essence of the team's name - a homage to their love for both the enchanting myth of unicorns and the glorious spectrum of colors that they represent. Beyond the joy of competition, their favorite aspect of the sport they play, which is soccer, lies in the camaraderie and bonding that comes with being part of an inclusive and supportive team. Together, they sprinkle joy and positivity while running, passing, and shooting the ball, winning often, but also creating unforgettable memories and friendships that last a lifetime. History: 

Our team name is The Blue Anchors,  members of our team have played ESSC going back to 2018, participating in Floor Hockey, Soccer, Multisport & even some video game tournaments during COVID. Our favourite part about playing in the ESSC floor hockey league is it gets us nice and thirsty before we go out to Canadian Brewhouse for team dinner!

History: 

The Sh*thawks were established in 2018. We wanted a fun team name to go with the vibe of the team. I have been there form the start and have managed the team. We are a fun and easy going team. We invite players to join us, no matter skill level. All we ask is have a good attitude and come out and enjoy yourself.  Are team age varies from 18 all the way to mid- 50’s. we have played 13 seasons and look forward to many more.

History: 

The Great Hambinos are Abdi, Ben, Craig, David, Denis, Edden, Franz, Joanne, Joe, Krista, Kristin, Mike and Steve. We don’t really have nicknames other than Kristin is “Stretch” and Denis is “The Big Cat” and many of us are just old timers. However, some of us are youngsters too. In fact, we have an age range of almost 50 years. Our team name comes from the great baseball movie The Sandlot. The catcher for the sandlot baseball team is Ham and he has invented an alter-ego wrestler named The Great Hambino. If you have not seen the movie The Sandlot, you really have to see it soon. It’s a classic. This is our first year in the ESSC as a team although a few of us have played for other teams in the past. I would have to say our favourite thing about the game is cheering for each other and trying not to get injured too badly! Finally, thank you to whoever nominated us for a Lady Bing Award.

History: 

Jets are known to be fast and agile; modern machines of precision engineering - we however, are not those Jets. Our speed is diminished, our balance suspect, and we've definitely got a few screws loose. The YEG Jets slo-pitch team is made up of employees of Edmonton International Airport who were looking for a fun way to connect with colleagues outside of the workplace. This is our first year playing with the ESSC and first time playing the sport for many of our team members. We love that the sport of slo-pitch gives us an opportunity to be active and build community with one another, while having a good laugh at ourselves along the way.

The Cul-de-Sac Flies is a slo-pitch team comprised of 30 to 40-year-olds who have been friends since childhood, growing up in the same cul-de-sac. Their name pays homage to their shared roots, and their dedication to teamwork and support sets them apart.  The Snails have been playing with the ESSC since 2015, with some players having played with the ESSC since 2010. We love that the ESSC provides a laid back, co-ed league so we can play with friends and partners in a just-for-fun environment, and one of our favourite things has been watching beginner soccer players improve to become some of the best players on our team.

We’re the Motion to Strikeouts, a reference to the fact that the team is almost entirely composed of lawyers in the public service (except for Scott, our resident “Man of Industry” and nefarious capitalist), as well as a reference to the obscene number of times our members strike out. Two birds - one stone, as they say. Although we’d need hundreds of stones to kill two birds, as we can’t aim a throw either. But I digress. This is our first season playing ESSC Rookie slo-pitch, but many of us are also in our third season of ESSC soccer (as the Motion to Strikers, with a flawless 0-18-2 record). The group really enjoys the social aspect of slo-pitch, and looks forward to finishing the season strong (or weak, we’re not picky).

Strike First came from the recent reboot of the Karate Kid called “Cobra Kai”. Found it fitting for our bowling team to “Strike Report”, Striking pins and not people. The is our first season playing ESSC, but we are really enjoying how it gives us a night out and a chance to meet and play against other teams.

History: 

Our story probably began the same as most do. We started out as individuals from seemingly different worlds that life would not normally throw together but through random chance and common appreciation of sport we ended up together. A good core of this team has been together for 15 years.

We started when we were just in our prime with seemingly no direction contrasted with now where we're in the early stages of family and fully invested in our careers. As the league reopened after the pause it seemed in a flash of light a lifetime had passed. So, when the call was made to assemble the team it was hard to ignore. Some of us were tempted to play because of some cling-on to past glory, try to be healthier or undo some other burn-out thing.

Collectively, we have about 500 seasons with the ESSC. Our name has changed over the and we feel we've seen it all. Been every team. Home and away. Young and old. Favored and under-dog. And everything in between.

Unfortunately, we our entering the final arc of our story and have oddly gone where most have not. Father-time is undefeated. He has all the t-shirts. Our experience with the league has been long and prosperous.

Hi, we are Crystal Palace, named after the premier league club, Crystal Palace FC. We have been playing in the ESSC for over 5 years. We pride ourselves on having fun and have definitely developed into a family over the years. We may only usually win a couple of games a season but we've definitely improved over the years and can also provide some stiff competition out there :). We love going for beers together after the game and definitely enjoy playing together every Monday night.

Hello all, we are For Fun Players, one of the most for fun teams you will ever meet.... ever! We are comprised of a ragtag group of friends who quite literally do this as our only for of physical activity, members of the squad include: Rohan Trey(Myself), Rohan Tevon(twin), Victor, Kathy (Mom 1), Cassandra(Mom 2), Jahmali, Deklin and Cleon! To be completely honest our team name came from our fun loving spirit and carefree nature when playing dodgeball, win or lose it’s all for fun! This is our 3rd season with ESSC and it’s an absolutely blast! Our teams favourite aspect of Dodgeball is the nostalgia of the game and the team bonding aspect! Thank you so much for the nomination!

Dirty Dangers is a unique mix of slo-pitch misfits who decided to try something new for the off-season. We've played ball together for 3+ years but this is our first season of Multi-Sport and we are LOVING it! History: 

In the Fall of 2022 “Balls to the Walls” was formed. It began on a Wednesday, “Wine Wednesday” to be exact. Five friends got together and decided that they should play “sports”, “it would be funny.” We conned our significant others into joining us and so began the most epic dance filled sports team to be found. We love laughing as we attempt a new sport and cheering each other on for the simplest of victories. Cheers to hitting every Ball at the Wall and not even close to the target area. We may not be number 1, but if losses were a win we would definitely take home that trophy!

Origin of our team’s name:

Sloths are very majestic creatures that are often misunderstood because of how slow and antisocial they are. Well, everyone’s perception of them was wrong. We are giving them the speed and socialization they’re often criticized for lacking. Take your average sloth and throw some soccer balls and friends in the mix and you have us… The Soccer Sloths!

Favorite aspect of the sport you play:

Our team loves coming together and strategizing at the beginning of the game then reorganizing at half to see where we are making errors. We are very competitive but understand that losing or having an off game is part of the sport. We enjoy calling out great plays with our team members, as well as the opposing teams.

History: This is our first season playing Pickleball! We joined after being encouraged by another member of ESSC, Jasmine Ferland. Brenda and I work together at Health Link 811 and that's how we came up with our team name, The Missing Link. We are having so much fun. The teams we play against are all so kind and encouraging. We try and do better every game we play. It's been so fun gaining new skills each week! We are looking forward to a long Pickleball career with ESSC

Origin of Team Name

TAU FC  stands for Team Awesome United Football Club.  This team played one season (through university of Alberta campus recreation) as a volleyball team named “Team Awesome. We thought adding the united and football club made us sound like a legit soccer team. It has stuck ever since!

We’ve been with ESSC for quite a long time. This is our 57^th season with ESSC!

Favorite aspect of the sport you play

We love the passion that soccer players have and just enjoy the comradery that the game creates. We just love to go out and have fun while kicking a ball! We also love dangles… many dangles.

There have been so many great people that have played with this team throughout the years. It is the people that truly make the team and has created the TAU FAMILY. Big thanks to everyone who has played on this team. You are ones who have made it truly special!

“Bass Get Ball is a rag tag group of pals always down for some good ol’ clean fun! Originally signing up with next to no basketball experience, we’re now in our fourth season with ESSC and while we’ve only got one win in the standings, we’ve got 29 wins in our hearts. Regardless of the score, you’ll always see us with smiles on our faces, cheering each other on, and going for celebratory post-game beers (when it’s not past our bedtime). Hooray for weekly organized activities with friends!"

History: 

This is technically the second season for the Featherless Bipeds, as we played in the 16 week season right before this. We are largely a team of people who have not played before, or only played a couple of seasons themselves. We really love slo-pitch for the social aspect, and there are so many people on the team from various aspects of my life; it's really cool to see everyone brought together by sport! There are people I know from other teams, school, various workplaces, and friends-of-friends who joined the team. Lastly, if you're wondering what the heck a "Featherless Biped" is, the term is a reference to an unsatisfactory definition of a human being from an old Socratic dialogue. Basically, someone says that a human being is simply a featherless thing that walks on two feet (aka a biped) and some cynic holds up a plucked chicken and says "behold, a man!" to prove his point that a man is more than simply being featherless and walking on two feet. Anyways, that's the nerdy name, and that's our team!

History: 

At the start of 2022, Team Captains Kole “The Rooster” Visser and Carlos “The Snake” Palma decided to gather a bunch of co-workers from Laser City Edmonton.We, alongside some fantastic friends, came  together to create the 2 Laser 2 Tag Slo Pitch team. While a few members such as Taylor “The Bull” Blanchard have been a part of the ESSC in the past, we are excited to admit that for most of our awesome team, this is our first season playing together. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work together, as it has brought us closer and created a lot of great laughs! Working with team members such as Janet “The Bullet” Haslam, Renand “The Gamemaster” Fulgueras and Kaylah “The logistics” Steinhaur have been an absolute pleasure. Creating and sharing these memories with friends has definitely been a highlight of this ESSC experience and we can’t wait to share them with the other teams soon!

The team was clumsily conceived in the darkest hours of a hot and sticky August night. The Founding Members discovered that their pints had been finished and wondered where it all went wrong. That fateful night, the Captain and Husband birthed the team by mistake, registering a group of ragtag individuals for ball hockey instead of tiddlywinks. A near-mythic opening game, in a rocky first season, sparked a legacy of hard-nosed but fair play and provided a name for these spindly but tough athletes – The Fighting Gazelles.

History: 

Our team is made up of mostly nurses and doctors. We work at the Grey Nuns Emergency department, and we have played together for 7 years, while taking 2020 summer off due to covid. Our favorite part of playing is being able to enjoy spending time together away from work, blow off some steam, have fun together and rebuild some morale. Our team name is a bit of a dark joke, a play on words from using bag tags at work and tagging people out by their toe at the game.

History: Our team had played in the ESSC for quite a few year and we were formally, “The Dark Knights”, but as life went on, players on our team changed to Life, Work, other commitments and such.  Along the way we made new life long friends and comrades and formed the new Batman Beyond team, a new generation of Bat people.  Our team is a tight knit group of players who love playing soccer, having fun, having drinks after the game and overall enjoying spending time with each other.  I can’t be more proud of this team, and couldn’t be happier playing with such an excellent group of friends.  We Love the ESSC!!!!

History: We are Pancake Batters! This is our first season as a team. Some of us have been playing for a while, others it is their first time. Our favorite part of the sport is meeting new people and having the opportunity to exercise in a fun way with a great group! We enjoy our inside jokes and sharing watermelon with the competition.

History: Hi, we are Crystal Palace, named after the premier league club, Crystal Palace FC. We have been playing in the ESSC for over 5 years. We pride ourselves on having fun, and have definitely developed into a family over the years. We may only usually win a couple of games a season but we've definitely improved over the years and can also provide some stiff competition out there :). We love going for beers together after the game and definitely enjoy playing together every Monday night.

We are team Diplomaticos. We get our name from a famous (and excellent) Venezuelan rum. Our team started as a bunch of Venezuelan players that just wanted to have some fun, but quickly transformed into a diverse group that enjoys spending time together while playing ball. We all love baseball and have been playing in the ESSC every year since Fall 2017. The good spirit and special vibes in the team are our best quality.

Turtle is a team consisting of a grand group of friends, all connected through a deep and profound question: "Hey you guys wanna play soccer together?" The name "Turtle" was also decided upon for an equally deep and profound reason; we thought it sounded cute and it gave us an excuse to make pretty tie-dyed shirts. Though many of us have played in ESSC before, this is Turtle's first season together. The team we rep is SLIDER INSIDE, Slo Pitch is the game its our ride or die. Our name came from getting down and being a little gritty too. We got Big Daddy, Smalls, the Chopper, and thats only a small taste of the crew! We started out not knowing one another or how this was going to turn out to be, but now theres only one word to use thats family. We got 27 seasons under our belts, its for the love of the game that we show up and endure these bruises and welts. We always want to go and get that W its the dream, but what we truly value is good competition and kicking it with all the other teams. Well enough with all this chit chat we got a game to play, Y’all better turn up, cause thats the Slider Inside way!

Hi we are the Dark Horses. We started playing badminton this year and made it a goal in 2022 to challenge ourselves. Both of us are open to many sports, but we found badminton the most enjoyable. We love playing badminton with our friends and try our best to support each other.

Originally called Shake and Bake, Cash Me Offside formed from a group of car enthusiasts turned soccer players in the year of 2016. Our current roster is a rotating cast of characters from the original incarnation of Shake and Bake and subs turned into permanent players who just want to chase a ball around with friends. Our jerseys feature an image of Bhad Bhabie saying "How Bout Dat" on the back and we begin each game yelling "Cash me Offside!" "How Bout Dat" while thrusting our fists through a ring created by one player's arms. Unlike the stale meme we pull our name from, we like to keep it fun and energetic out on the pitch.

Pop Flies Chicken is named after the great Popeyes Chicken and represents our team's love of the important things… like fried chicken. Remember when the Blue Jays celebrated sweeping the Yankees with a Korean Fried Chicken Party? That’s basically us every week just with more beers and we probably didn’t win any games. Regardless of the outcome, we are physically incapable of not high-fiving after every inning, and even when we are down by 20, you’ll still never stop hearing us make jokes with each other in the outfield.

We are Scared Hitless! We used to be Sour Patch Children but really we were a Sour Patch Family so we changed our names to represent us better, scared and hit little to no people.... BUT we do so with a smile on our face and drinks in our stomachs immediately after to forget our incredible loses. On our team we have nine amazing individuals: Splitz, Knee pads, Crazy Legs, Beef, Oh no no, Goalie, Father, New Guy, and El Presidente. Our names were given to us by other members of our team based on our playing style. We are a new team collectively and have been playing together for two seasons but we love Dodgeball because of the opportunity to have fun, meet new people, gain crazy skills, and most of all see how quickly the other teams can defeat us!  We will see you on the courts and in our Hearts ❤️

Rimshots is composed of teachers and chiropractors. This is the second season (of hopefully many) that our team is playing together in the ESSC. Our team sustained 2 substantial injuries recently and now we play in honor of those teammates lost. Our team likes to shoot the ball, and a few of us love playing aggressive defense.

The origin of your team’s name: Caged Birdies comes from the Maya Angelou poem "The Caged Bird Sings"  Although we have screamed and laughed during games but never have we sung as of yet.

How many seasons your team has played with the ESSC: first season at badminton and love it!!!

Favorite aspect of the sport you play: The other teams have all been great fun!  

Anything else you want to include: I hope that more people will get out and play and not worry about the competitive aspect of the game.  Although some teams are more competitive than others, we have found that our attitude of fun first helps set the stage before the game even begins.
